Development of Medical Communication Subject in Medical School Curriculum

Abstract
Background: The need of development of medical communication subject is increasing. Recently many medical schools in Korea are newly developing the curriculum to teach medical students about communication. The purpose of this study is to develop a standard medical communication subject in a medical school to teach medical students about the knowledge, skills and attitude for effective medical communication.

Methods: 5 professionals including 1 professor in family medicine, 1 professor in family medicine and medical education, 1 professor in linguistics, 1 professor in German, and 1 professor in computer science collaborated to review the references and survey the need of medical students, medical teachers, patients, and community people for medical communication education. We developed a standard medical communication subject by mutual consensus.

Results: We developed the purposes of medical communication education, and developed learning subjects of medical communication. We also developed the tools of teaching medical communication and evaluation method to assess students¡¯ performances.

Conclusion: The medical communication subject should be tailored to medical students¡¯ needs. Experiential
learning for medical communication will be effective. The effect of "hidden curriculum" in a medical school should be considered, and the medical school faculties should be encouraged to continue showing good role models to the medical students.
